Identifier structure
EAN-8 is a compact GS1 retail identifier for packages too small to carry an EAN-13 symbol at a usable module size. It has seven data digits and one check digit. The shorter body means that an EAN-8 allocation is not a trimmed EAN-13 number: obtain and manage it through GS1 procedures before using it in commerce.
Worked numerical example
For the body 9638507, calculate from the right using weights 3, 1, 3, 1, 3, 1, 3: 9×3 + 6 + 3×3 + 8 + 5×3 + 0 + 7×3 = 86. The next multiple of ten is 90, giving check digit 4 and complete number 96385074. This generator accepts an existing eighth digit only when it agrees with that calculation.
How the symbol encodes data
The symbol has four digits on each side of the centre guard, framed by start and end guards. Its smaller width is useful only if the printer can still reproduce the narrowest bar and space. A compact symbol that is below the scanner's resolution is worse than a larger EAN-13 label placed elsewhere.
Physical failure mode
Avoid wrapping the barcode around a small bottle, printing it across a fold, or using a decorative colour pair with low contrast. Leave quiet zones blank; they are part of the scanning geometry. Raster exports should use an integer number of pixels per module so resampling does not turn square module boundaries into grey edges.
Operational boundary
EAN-8 differs from UPC-A and EAN-13 by capacity and allocation, not by being a casual shortened display. Its check digit uses the same modulo-10 idea, while Code 39 and Code 128 encode general data rather than a fixed retail GTIN. ITF-14 instead marks an outer shipping case.
A format-specific proof
The decisive EAN-8 question is whether the small pack can still carry enough module width, not whether eight digits look convenient. For a seven-digit body such as 9638507, the calculated 4 confirms the sequence 96385074; it says nothing about a curved vial, a seam or a printer whose smallest space fills with ink. When the allocated symbol will not fit readably, change the approved package artwork or consult the identifier owner rather than compressing the bars.

Decide whether the package qualifies before shrinking art
Consider a 28 mm cosmetic tube with only one flat printable panel. Measure the usable panel after seams, mandatory text and quiet zones are reserved; then ask the relevant GS1 organisation or number owner whether the consumer unit has an assigned GTIN-8. An EAN-8 is not a designer's compact version of an EAN-13. The seven data digits and their calculated eighth digit must belong to the assigned record before a symbol is drawn. GS1 distinguishes EAN-8 carrying a GTIN-8 from EAN-13 carrying a GTIN-13: https://ref.gs1.org/guidelines/2d-in-retail/1.0.0/. If allocation or print geometry does not support the label, change the package presentation; do not delete digits from an existing retail number.
Test the tube, carton and checkout separately
Print the approved EAN-8 proof on the actual tube material and on a flat white control. Scan both with the intended retail reader. If the control returns 96385074 while the tube fails, the identifier and checksum are not the problem; curvature, gloss, seam placement or module width is. If both fail, compare the source digits and print settings before changing the package. The outer carton may have room for EAN-13 even when the tube does not, so its artwork must be tested as its own record. A phone-camera success on a flat screen is useful for a quick check but is not proof that the checkout reader can acquire the final curved symbol.
Keep a small-pack release note
For each compact retail symbol, retain the assigned GTIN-8, complete eight-digit human-readable value, package dimensions, chosen print panel, final artwork revision and point-of-sale scan result. Add the reason the short identifier was approved, so a later designer does not reuse it for a new scent, size or carton. When the tube artwork changes, repeat the scan after the final varnish and colour process rather than trusting an earlier PDF. The generator's arithmetic answer is one entry in this record. It cannot establish allocation, that a neighbouring package can reuse the code, or that a retail system accepts an untested production print.
A final EAN-8 release test
Approve the compact label only after the final package sample returns the assigned eight-digit value at the retail reader. Compare the source GTIN-8, check digit, SVG, human-readable digits, panel position and scan result in one record. If the small tube cannot carry a readable symbol after final print, do not stretch bars or remove quiet zones to preserve the layout. Escalate the package or allocation decision instead. This distinguishes a legitimate short retail identifier from a visually compact but unusable mark, and preserves evidence for the next artwork revision.
What a compact result means
A completed eight-digit string confirms the supplied EAN-8 arithmetic. Allocation, small-package eligibility and checkout acceptance still require the relevant product and retail records.
Keep the tube proof
Retain one final curved-package scan beside the flat control. It proves that the compact symbol survived the actual material rather than only the desktop preview.
