Identifier structure
ITF-14 identifies a logistics unit such as a carton or case, not the consumer item itself. Its fourteen digits are typically built from a packaging indicator, a twelve-digit GTIN body and a modulo-10 check digit. The packaging indicator commonly distinguishes a case hierarchy, but it is a business allocation decision rather than a number to invent for a label.
Worked numerical example
For 1061414100001, apply alternating weights of 3 and 1 from the right across the thirteen-digit body: 1×3+0+6×3+1+4×3+1+4×3+1+0×3+0+0×3+0+1×3 = 50. The check digit is 0, so the finished ITF-14 is 10614141000010. The same modulo-10 rule appears in GTIN symbols, but the packaging role makes the number meaning different.
How the symbol encodes data
Interleaved 2 of 5 encodes digits in pairs: one digit controls bars and the other controls spaces. That is why the complete ITF-14 count is even. The symbol has a start pattern, paired digit patterns and a stop pattern. Bearer bars or a surrounding bearer box are often used on corrugated cases to reduce partial scans and improve handling in logistics environments.
Physical failure mode
A carton symbol faces rougher conditions than a shelf label: corrugation valleys, tape, scuffs, seams, low-contrast ink and long scan distances. Put it on a flat panel, keep the quiet zone free, avoid folding it around an edge, and select an X-dimension suitable for warehouse scanners. Confirm the finished case artwork, not merely the on-screen preview.

Build the case number from the packaging hierarchy
For a case of twelve consumer units, start with the approved packaging hierarchy in the product master, not with a random leading digit that happens to create fourteen characters. The example body 1061414100001 becomes ITF-14 10614141000010 only because its final zero satisfies modulo-10; the leading 1 has meaning only if the supplier's allocation rules assign it to that case level. ITF-14 carries a GTIN for a trade-item grouping, whereas an SSCC identifies an individual logistic unit. Choose ITF-14 or GS1-128 from the receiving fields
A warehouse receiving only a case-level GTIN can use an ITF-14 proof and check that the scan returns the case record. A shipment that must carry lot AB-123, an expiry or an individual pallet reference needs a field contract that ITF-14 cannot encode; GS1-128 or an SSCC-based logistic label may be the relevant route. Print two controlled cases and scan them into the real receiving screen: one with the ordinary case value and one where the required lot or shipment value differs. A scanner beep or a camera showing digits is insufficient. The application must place the case, lot and pallet data into the intended records without silently treating a case GTIN as a serial shipment identity.
Proof the corrugated panel at dock conditions
Place the finished ITF-14 on the flattest available carton panel, away from tape, seams, corners and handling labels that invade the quiet zone. Test a plain control and the actual corrugated proof at the distance and orientation used at the dock. If only the control scans, inspect ink spread, corrugation valleys, bearer bars, contrast and placement; changing the check digit cannot cure an optical failure. Record the 14-digit source, symbology, case description, print process, reader model and returned receiving record. This makes a later discrepancy diagnosable: invalid allocation, altered bars and a receiver configured for another carrier require different corrections.
A final ITF-14 release test
Before a case run, compare the approved case-level GTIN, calculated check digit, generated artwork and receiving-system result. Scan a final corrugated sample at the same distance and orientation used by the warehouse, then retain the proof with its print revision. If the value scans but opens a consumer-unit record, correct the packaging hierarchy; if it fails only on corrugate, correct placement or print quality. Do not treat a case barcode as an SSCC or add lot data that the carrier cannot encode. The final decision is a receiving workflow result, not a successful browser drawing.
What a case result means
A completed ITF-14 confirms the supplied case value's arithmetic. It does not allocate a packaging hierarchy, serialise a pallet or show that a receiving system accepts the case label.
Keep the dock proof
Retain a receiving scan of the final case panel. It ties the physical corrugated print to the case record that the warehouse actually used.
