An SVG label has two dimensions

The QR matrix has a module count chosen by the payload and correction level. The label also has a physical outside width in millimetres. This tool encodes the supplied text, adds four quiet modules on each side, and writes an SVG viewBox whose cells remain square. It reports version, matrix width, total modules and calculated module pitch so the exported artwork is not an unmeasured black square.

Worked size calculation

For the text `https://north.example/menu`, assume the encoder selects 29 modules. At a requested 37 mm outside width, the total is 29 + 8 = 37 modules, so each cell is exactly 1 mm. If the same payload needs 33 modules at a 37 mm width, pitch becomes 37 ÷ 41 = 0.902 mm. The label can still look similar while carrying a materially tighter print tolerance.

Read-back is part of generation

Before enabling the SVG download, the browser paints the generated matrix to an off-screen canvas and asks its local QR decoder to read it. The returned payload must equal the entered text. This detects an encoder-to-renderer mismatch in the actual raster representation, not merely that the source text was accepted. It does not prove that a later PDF export, printer or camera will preserve the same geometry.

Error correction is not spare decoration

Higher correction levels add redundancy but often require more modules for the same text. A level H code may survive some data damage, yet it still needs finder patterns, timing geometry and a clean quiet zone. Do not use the extra capacity as permission to cover functional areas with a logo. If branding is essential, test the exact branded raster and physical proof separately.

Choose text economically

A direct short URL is usually less dense than a long query string, contact record or event description. Removing an unnecessary campaign parameter can increase module pitch without changing the label size. Do not shorten meaningful data merely to reach a visual target; instead decide whether a concise destination page can hold the longer explanation after the scan.

Artwork failures happen after download

SVG protects square geometry only while the next application preserves it. Non-uniform scaling, clipping the outer pale border, converting to a low-resolution bitmap, trapping, ink spread and glossy glare can all defeat a code that passed local read-back. Place the SVG at its intended physical width, export a proof, and scan that proof at the expected distance with ordinary phones.

A label is not a private channel

Local generation means the entered text is not sent to this website. Anyone who can see the printed code can still decode it. Do not put credentials, secrets, medical details or account recovery material into a public label. QR privacy concerns the generation path and the visibility of the finished carrier are separate.

The read-back boundary

A matching local raster read-back confirms that the entered text, encoder and browser rendering agreed before download. It does not certify a later PDF conversion, printer, substrate, viewing distance or camera. The exported vector must keep square modules and its outer light rectangle, then be tested in the production form rather than treated as a finished physical proof.

Use the exported SVG without changing its geometry

Place the downloaded SVG at its stated width in the layout application and lock its aspect ratio. The white rectangle is intentional: it protects the quiet zone from a coloured background. If the package design needs a border, place it outside that rectangle rather than on top of it. Render the final PDF or raster at production resolution, then decode that exported proof as well as the browser read-back. A pass at generation establishes a useful invariant: the local encoder and raster renderer agreed on the entered text. A later failure identifies a transformation after generation, which is far more actionable than blaming the original payload or changing several unrelated settings.

A real label approval

For a 37 mm menu label, save the SVG, place it at 37 mm, and export a 300 dpi proof. Its 37-module outside grid gives one millimetre cells in the worked case. Scan the raster, then scan a physical print under the counter lighting. If all three return the same URL, the evidence covers generation, layout export and reproduction. If the physical copy alone fails, retain the two successful digital artifacts and adjust substrate, size or finish instead of regenerating a different QR payload.

A 45 mm equipment label can be measured before it is printed

A service team needs a QR label that opens `https://example.com/manual/A17`. The generator reports the symbol matrix and includes the quiet zone in the requested outside dimension. If the chosen payload produces a 33-module matrix, adding four quiet-zone modules on both edges creates a 41-module outside square. At 45 mm, each module is about 1.10 mm wide. If a campaign parameter or long tracking URL changes the matrix to 49 modules, the same 45 mm panel becomes 57 modules and the pitch drops to about 0.79 mm. That is a layout decision with numbers, not an aesthetic preference. Hand off a vector with an acceptance record

Place the downloaded SVG at 45 by 45 mm without non-proportional scaling, rasterise only when the production workflow requires it, and inspect the exported proof rather than a screen preview. The quiet zone belongs in the object dimensions: a designer who crops it to make the dark matrix look larger has changed the scanner target. Record the exact payload, outside width, module pitch, artwork revision and physical scan result. Scan at the distance and on the material the label is intended for; a glossy curved enclosure can fail despite a correct SVG. This generator is useful for geometry and vector artwork, but it cannot confirm that the URL is still maintained, that a camera understands the intended structured payload, or that a printer has not introduced gain. When the pitch is too small, shorten the payload or enlarge the panel; adding a logo or reducing the margin moves in the wrong direction.

Do not re-create the square in a layout program

Use the downloaded SVG as one locked object. Rebuilding modules with a drawing grid, tracing a PNG, or manually adding a white frame creates a new symbol that no longer has the measured module count. If artwork software reports a different bounding box, inspect its export settings before approving it. The correct next artifact is a rendered proof scanned from the final output resolution.

Keep the requested outside size explicit

Write `45 mm outside, quiet zone included` in the artwork note rather than merely `45 mm QR`. That phrase stops a later editor from measuring only the dark matrix and trimming the border. If a template has a smaller reserved panel, choose a new size or a shorter payload and regenerate the SVG; do not crop an already approved object.
